Baby Contest Photography

The 2012 Gerber Baby Contest Grand Prize Winner

You don’t need to be a professional to be great at Baby Contest Photography.  In fact most baby photo contests are won by pictures taken by parents or amateur photographers.    The trick is understanding your audience, knowing who the judges are and then taking pictures that have  the best chance of winning.

Don’t over think the process – Most people take it too seriously and try create a perfect picture by choreographing everything including the pose, the clothes and the background.  Don’t do this you’re asking for a challenging photo shoot and you’re pictures wont appear natural.

A better strategy is to let your child be themselves and you look for the perfect opportunity to capture a great picture.  You don’t need a pose and the setting doesn’t matter that much in most contests.  However if you’re entering a contest for a particular brand, then make sure the photo includes the brands product or logo and that it is inline with their corporate image.

Most  winning baby contest photography is spontaneous and natural.

You’re kid already has everything needed to win.  All you need to do is capture an image of  them being themselves, in a moment that fits the contests criteria.  If this sounds complicated?  It’s not, just look at this picture of Mercy it won the 2012 Gerber Baby Contest.  It’s simple, it focuses on the face the background is minimal and it looks completely natural, it’s possible that this was the result of a pose, but it looks more like someone took the picture at the perfect time when Mercy was having lots of fun.  She just glows.

Baby contest photography winners know the rules!

This picture was selected by the judges for The Gerber Baby Contest from thousands of photos and won because it was the best representation of Gerber’s criteria including (1) visual appeal of the child(ren) in the photo; (2) expressiveness of child(ren) in photo; and (3) consistency with Gerber’s heritage and its Start Healthy, Stay Healthy™ (or successor program) mission.

Baby contest photography takes patience

You don’t need to get the perfect picture on day 1.  In fact your goal should be to get the very best picture possible.  Don’t submit your first photo, take hundreds and then pick the best one based on the contest rules.  Better yet get your friends or family to read the rules, and then have them pick the best 10 pictures based on the rules and photo submission guidelines.   Once you’ve narrowed it down to the top 10 pick the best one and enter.
